Stop jumping, let's run!

Il Free Game of the Week is the appointment of Resources4Gaming.com which, every Saturday, puts in the spotlight a downloadable iPhone app at no cost. Not necessarily new titles or leading labels but rather, simply, products that deserve to be taken into consideration. All the more so if you don't have to shell out even a penny.

In a matter of months, the talented Canadian developers of Get Set Games have created a real cult phenomenon on the App Store and Google Play, Mega Jump (we reviewed it recently), which was downloaded and played. by over twenty-two million people around the world. Much of the success of this product is undoubtedly due to the sympathy of the character, not surprisingly who has become the protagonist of a new free title, in fact Mega Run - Redford's Adventure.

Stop jumping, let's run!

Curious cross between a gecko, a teddy bear and a dinosaur, the funny little monster Redford kept us company for hours between one jump and another, ranging within the more traditional survival structure, enriched however by an important sense of progression thanks to the presence of scenarios to be unlocked as new heights were reached. The next challenge of Get Set Games was to use the platforms for something more than a bounce, to bet again on the numbers (in this specific case four different worlds, for a total of sixty-four levels) and to insert an extremely immediate but in many ways original, as the width of the jump depends on the duration of the pressure on the screen and is therefore not predetermined. It may seem silly, but platformers will struggle a bit to familiarize themselves with this solution and take the right steps to carry out their maneuvers. Fortunately, in the end, the system will prove to be valid and accurate ...

Hopping happily

The gameplay of Mega Run - Redford's Adventure it represents a mix of two different genres: on the one hand we have the endless run element, since the character will never stop running towards the right side of the screen to reach the exit of each level; on the other the platform component, determined precisely by the presence of platforms on which to jump, by enemies to be eliminated in the same way (by jumping on their heads) and by chasms and traps that must be avoided by calculating the timing of the action well.

Stop jumping, let's run!

As mentioned above, the controls are really simple: just touch the screen for Redford to jump, which can be more or less large depending on the duration of the pressure, as well as transform into a double jump in certain cases. As in Mega Jump, one of our goals is to collect the largest number of coins, crystals and special items scattered within each scenario, also taking advantage of momentary upgrades that will allow us to pass through walls and opponents, all in order to obtain the best possible evaluation at the end of the internship, ie three stars. It goes without saying that the unlocking system of the new worlds and new levels depends precisely on the stars in our possession, which at some point will lead us to replay missions already completed in search of a perfect performance, to the benefit of the longevity of the game. Don't think, however, that the degree of challenge is low: when we come into contact with an enemy, Redford falls to the platform below but continues his run. The problem is when the impact occurs in the absence of additional "layers", which results in a game over. The variety of worlds, each based on a different theme, contributes to enrich the gameplay while the picture is completed by a very nice graphics, characterized by an excellent design and an excellent use of colors.

If Mega Jump brought challenge and progression to the jumping game genre, so too Mega Run - Redford's Adventure takes the traditional limits of horizontal scrolling running games and breaks them, offering us a level structure that has nothing to envy to much more famous platformers and that will keep us busy for quite some time, especially when getting the best possible rating in the stages it will become a necessary condition to be able to unlock new scenarios. Nice, colorful and fun, the title of Get Set Games boasts a terribly simple and immediate control system, while adopting an alternative solution compared to the standards of the genre as regards the management of the jump, which must be "digested" but which hides an unexpected degree of accuracy.
