Nintendo Wii U is updated, it hasn't happened for years

This 2021 sees Nintendo completely projected towards the future: production of the 3DS has been discontinued and the focus is now entirely on Nintendo Switch, which is now nearly four years old. Despite this, it seems the video game giant still has enough time in its busy schedule to update its older systems. In this particular case, we are talking about Nintendo Wii U, which has received a new update, the 5.5.5 U. The previous update, on 5.5.4, had been released exclusively for Europe in 2019, while for the American territory it is the last update from September 2018.

Further improvements have been made to the overall system stability and other minor adjustments to improve the user experience.

The patch notes of this update reveals that it is not anything interesting. Version 5.5.5 U of the Nintendo Wii U update takes care of introducing "System stability and usability improvements". Specifically, the update talks about "Further improvements to review the stability of the system and introduce other minor adjustments designed to enhance the user experience". Nothing particularly striking then, but the classic patch aimed at managing the maintenance of a console which despite the years, apparently, is still in Nintendo's thoughts, despite the poor sales compared to the predecessor Wii Wii U, in fact, until now had completely disappeared from the radar, as it should be seen the passage of time and the enormous success that Nintendo Switch is having.

It is not news, in fact, of how much Wii U was a major blow to the Japanese company in the commercial arena. During its life cycle, the console it sold a total of 13 million units. A truly negligible figure, considering the fact that Nintendo Switch has sold over 68 million units (data updated to 30 September 2020). The result is even more sensational when we consider that the console has surpassed the sales of its predecessor only in the first nine months of life.
