Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire - Review, Obsidian Entertainment's RPG arrives on PS4

Today we are here to talk to you about Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire, title already available on PC but that after a long wait has finally arrived on PS4. The experience is a full D&D style RPG, enriched with new features, improved graphics and in-depth mechanics. The adventure will be completely new and the choices will have a bearing on the story. You will have the opportunity to explore the new region of Deadfire, plotting your route by sea and exploring uncontaminated territories. The ship will be your trusted travel companion, in fact the development team has paid particular attention to this element. Although we haven't gone into details yet, we can tell you with certainty that if you love role-playing games you can't miss this product.

Where were we

The game picks up exactly where you left off, if you still have the save available, and once you create the new character you will be filled with questions about past events, so you can shape your story as you please. As in any self-respecting RPG, this step is very delicate as it is important: in addition to the races, you will choose things like the place of birth, work and much more. Based on the decisions made, certain values will be attributed to certain characteristics or specialties. The adventure will officially start when you wake up aboard your ship, from this moment get ready for everything. In fact, the title leaves a considerable freedom of action, giving the player the means to be what he wants. However, the first few hours of the game are for the most part a series of long tutorials that do nothing but gradually insert more and more information especially under the gameplay side.

Let's say that the trip to the sea will not end too well and consequently you will be shipwrecked in a short time. Here then is where the game itself will begin to introduce you to its world, colorful and full of facets. The videogame as the main novelty introduces a new map, so as to encourage exploration through simple and pure curiosity, which will inspire you to visit every area of this new corner of the universe. If you were expecting not particularly rich areas, you are wrong, especially given the care that the team has dedicated to this aspect of production. However, after a few hours, dedicating yourself to the discovery could bring you a good sense of repetition, which in the long run could tire you.

As for pure storytelling. on the other hand, both as regards the opening incipit and the surprises later on, we find a well-crafted and tempting main story, not seasoned, however, by particularly good secondary ones. In fact, mind quests seem to be a mere filler whose sole purpose is to give us extra objects and hours of play. Some themes addressed by the plot are, by now, trite and withdrawn, all told, however, with good rhythm and vehemence. While it doesn't have any sharp details, everything runs smoothly and pleasantly smoothly, what which is also aided by the rich cast of characters present, all very varied and charismatic. The party members themselves are full of personality, who do not step on each other but who travel cohesively to the end, thus enriching the overall experience of the adventure.

Gameplay and naval battles

If on the plot front we were not particularly impressed, the speech appears very different with regard to the combat system, which presents changes and improvements to the good things done in the first chapter. Everything does not appear particularly revolutionized, but the news - even if few - give the player a new breath of fresh air. Long battles work the same way, giving you the ability to control either the entire party or individual characters at your leisure. The casting of spells or attacks remained unchanged, therefore all those who have enjoyed the work in the past will immediately find themselves at home. The title, as you complete missions, will give you a very rich loot, and in the final stages of the adventure you will find yourself being real riches. Surely everything is linked to the development system of the ship and the crew, but it is still exaggerated and unbalanced despite the enormous expenses that you will have. In addition to what has just been said, there is also a classic recipe-based crafting system in-game, which of course will require time and dedication.

To all this there are also naval battles, the new fulcrum of production and introduced for the first time right within this Deadfire. First you have to either attack a vessel or be the victim yourself: in these moments the captains of the respective ships will have to choose in turn which move to make, such as moving the boat or hitting with cannons. Although a war strategy is appropriate, it will all be more closely tied to the statistics system and how the vessel was chosen to develop. If more than a warship, yours looks like a tub, but you are still equipped with a very powerful party, you need not worry in the least, you can attempt the boarding to take possession of the enemy loot.

In conclusion

From a technical point of view, the game defends itself very well, thanks above all to the new lighting system and greater vitality of the maps. Even the music that will keep you company during the adventure is pleasant, characteristic and well done. In conclusion, we can say with certainty that this Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire on PS4 it was a nice surprise. We enjoyed it for many hours and recommend the purchase to all RPG fans. Obsidian once again proves capable of creating and characterizing vast universes and worlds in a truly sublime way, which should be taken as a source of inspiration for many other development houses. The final product hides within itself an undoubted quality, we had fun and we can't wait to get back to the title as soon as possible to dedicate ourselves to the very rich end game.
