PS5: According to Tim Sweeney, SSD is years ahead of PCs

Through a post on his official Twitter profile, Tim Sweeney talked about the SSD's Playstation 5, calling it a technical advantage that PCs will take what year to fill. The boss of epic Games answered a question from a user, who asked how the next generation console could match and exceed the technical performance of a PC. Sweeney had previously talked about the performance of PS5, especially praising the architecture chosen for memory management, while in the course of an interview with Geoff keighley defined the move from a simple HDD to an SSD - which we know will be an integral part of both PS5 that of Xbox Series X- as a big change that will significantly reduce any type of loading in the game. Less and less is missing this winter, when players will finally be able to get their hands on the next generation console, so you just have to wait to actually see their technical performance.

See the coverage of Mark Cerny's talk for technical details. The software and hardware stack go to great lengths to minimize latency and maximize the bandwidth that's actually accessible by games. On PC, there's a lot of layering and overhead.

Intel's work on non-volatile NVDIMMs is very exciting and may get PC data transfer on a better track over the coming years.
