Last December, Keiichiro Toyama has announced that he has permanently left SIE Japan Studio, to form his new team Bokeh Game Studio, which he founded with Junya Okura, lead designer of the series Gravity Rush, Kazunobu Sato, lead designer of the exclusive Puppeteer to Sony PlayStation 3. Today, new information has leaked about their upcoming title, which for many may be the next chapter in the saga of Silent Hill. In a recent interview, the creator of Silent Hill joked that there is a lot more to reveal, especially about a mysterious collaboration for the game:
We're obviously still in an early period, so there's not much we can actually say, but we're trying to create an experience that can be widely enjoyed by a wide range of people. So, for example, we want our game to be set in Asian cities. One thing we can say is that we are working hard right now to start collaborating with a famous creator in Japan, and this is something we weren't convinced about from the start. The games have gotten bigger and bigger in recent years. The audience became wider, especially for companies like Sony, where I was. However, instead of reaching the largest possible audience, my games choose their audience in a certain particular way. In the end I am confident that they leave a trace. I aspire to create IPs that fans can enjoy even 10, 20 years after their release. Since I want to continue to achieve this under the right conditions, I felt it was a necessity to have my own studio.
Toyama's next game will be a action-adventure horror title, which aims for a cross-platform release in 2023. Many of the former members of the designer's Japan Studio team are believed to have followed him to Bokeh Game Studio, prior to the closure of the SIE studio. So we just have to wait a little longer to find out what the project is and who the team is working with. Maybe Silent Hill.
