PlayStation 5: HDMI 2.1 is lower than that of Xbox Series X

PlayStation 5: HDMI 2.1 is lower than that of Xbox Series X

After official confirmation by Sony regarding the actual presence of the cable HDMI 2.1 in the sales package of PlayStation 5, it would seem that the latter is not up to the counterpart proposed by the Redmond house. According to the recent words of the HDTVTest guru, Vincent Teoh, one of the major limitations of the Japanese company's HDMI cable would be the supported bandwidth. As can be seen from the tests carried out, a video that you can easily recover on the cover, Xbox Series X would be able to hit 40 GB / s, while PlayStation 5 would only stop at 32 GB / s. This means that when playing a 120Hz game, Sony's console will have to switch to a 4: 2: 2 chroma subsampling, while Microsoft's next-gen peripheral is capable of maintaining the optimal 4: 4: 4 format.

It is currently unclear whether it is a malfunction of some cables PS2.1 HDMI 5 or a real one hardware limitation o software of the console. In the latter case, Sony could improve performance by releasing a future update, a bit like it could happen in the case of 1440p support. That bandwidth limitation results in a minimal image quality downgrade during the games, which we remember, for now the titles that support 120 fps are: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Dirt 5 e Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition.

But it's not all sunshine and roses at Microsoft, given that the cable supplied with PlayStation 5 would be compatible with the new FRL, while Xbox Series X / S would continue to use the TMDS standard when it outputs at 60 Hz. From a practical point of view, this small difference should not bring any substantial advantage, since 4K at 60 fps was already perfectly supported by HDMI 2.0, with TMDS still on board. Waiting to find out more details on the story, we remind you that yesterday PlayStation 5 e PlayStation 5 Digital Edition have officially made their debut, and are available for purchase respectively at the price of 499,99 € e 399,99 €.
