Resident Evil 3 - Review, and finally comes the Nemesis

The saga of resident evil has always had charm: starting from the villa in the Arklay mountains up to the events of the Baker family, every piece of history brings novelty and tradition at the same time. In fact, if we go to reconstruct the series, only with Code: Veronica we see a change from the simple zombie declination (which has never been simple). Perhaps this evolution over time has made these two remakes not only welcome, but necessary. So if we have already experienced the events of Leon and Claire in Resident Evil 2, now it's Jill Valentine's turn, in hers Resident Evil 3.

Before leaving, two important points must be clarified immediately: Jill is not a new figure, and above all she is not a newbie. The STARS agent is in fact part of one of the two protagonists of the first chapter (which you can replay together with Resident Evil Zero in the remastered ones born from the GameCube version), but above all he is neither a policeman on his first day of work, nor a university student looking for his brother. For this reason, the dynamics of Resident Evil 3, just as it was for the original version, are more action (and become more so in this remake also thanks to the control system, closer to the recent chapters than to the old ones).

Meantime…

The story of Jill Valentine starts one day earlier and ends one day after that of Resident Evil 2. After killing the Tyrant of the first chapter, while Chris Redfield left for Europe with the aim of completely dismantling theUmbrella, Jill decides to stay at Raccoon City a few days to check Umbrella and investigate what happened. The story starts right from here, but this time in a different way: the initial part, in fact, is much more structured compared to the original, pushing the player into the vortex of events in a more realistic way (thanks also to the means available). With the sole aim of saving herself, Jill will meet mercenaries only Umbrella, part of the UBCS (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasures Servicem), including Carlos Oliveira, a character who finds new life in this remake, thanks above all to more time on the screen, a greater characterization and a much more defined sympathy.

The game will mainly take us to experience the story as Jill, with the exception of a few scenes where we will instead take command of Carlos. Both trained soldiers, they will be much more fun to move between zombies and enemies, especially thanks to their arsenal and their skills. As in the original, Jill will be able to dodge enemy shots: in case you manage to push the button at the right moment, this will give you the possibility to dodge the attack with a somersault (in a very choreographic way). Carlos, with the same button, will instead be able to intercept the enemies at the moment of the attack with a punch worthy of those of Chris Redfield. The ammunition in this case will also be greater: the whole soul of the game seems to be much more action, especially in the second half of the adventure.

Finally, with a fan service obviously dedicated to old generation fans, Resident Evil 3 in this new form does not miss those iconic moments lived in 1999, but on the contrary expands them: if on the one hand, therefore, the graphic sector will be able to make those scenes so truthful, on the other hand the screenwriters have implemented the chapter with the story of the saga much better. The refinement of details is also seen in the dialogues, certainly more suitable for today's audience but faithful to the original. What does not remain faithful, at least not entirely, is the unfolding of events: some scenes and above all the running of the plot have been fixed, if not optimized, resulting now more realistic. There will therefore be some phases of the game that, in one way or another, have been revised, modified, altered or simply canceled.

The Persecutor

Resident Evil 3 was also historic for its title: for the first time, in fact, the word appeared next to the name of the game Nemesis. This was and is the name of the great enemy that characterizes this chapter, who strangely does not cross the unfortunates of Resident Evil 2, but who manages to stay with Jill all the time. Despite the aesthetic reinterpretation of the enemy, Nemesis also in this remake has the same goal: differently from the classic, however, the way in which things will go on for him they will be slightly different, just enough to make his pursuit of Jill more suitable for 2020 but without upsetting her nature.

What is a bit distorted instead is the way in which the plot evolves: as we said before, the optimization was more marked in this third chapter, some locations and some details have been completely eliminated, in favor of a weave more suitable for today's users. For the rest the pivotal points have not changed, making this Resident Evil 3 a rewarding experience regardless of duration.

In terms of gameplay, the more action-packed system is further accentuated by the removal of most of the puzzles: they leave room for a faster run to escape. Some remain, especially for collectibles, but it becomes paltry in comparison to the amount of puzzles that colored the original. Also eliminated the choices and the "constricting" presence of the Nemesis: in the first case we will not have the opportunity to make choices (which in the original slightly influence the plot), while in the second we have the first real flaw of the game. Unfortunately, the Tyrant of Resident Evil 3 in the 1999 game was much more present: this being haunted Jill far and wide, often appearing in its initial form and, only later, in the mutated forms. This time, however, the mutation begins almost immediately, leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of those who expected more. Even the initial section, that of the city, paradoxically becomes a stain of what it was in the original, although it is one of the few moments not related to history where the Nemesis tries to catch you. For the rest, this enemy is now decidedly better structured: faster and more dynamic, it can give more trouble.

Password: Remake

Resident Evil 3 makes the most of the RE Engine: better optimized than the previous chapter, the expressions are more defined and the general graphics are improved. Even the enemies, in greater numbers in terms of types, seem to have better AI (however intelligent a zombie can be). Unfortunately, the game - remaining faithful to the original - has a duration close to 5 hours to complete the campaign: obviously further difficulty levels allow you to replay the story, also taking advantage of a system of challenges to be completed that will take up your time (and give you as a reward a currency to unlock models, concept art and much more).

When we talk about Remake, we are basically talking about this: taking a title, a product, a past work and re-presenting it to today's public. This entails file some past mistakes, maybe it only happens after receiving prolonged and detailed feedback for over 20 years. Unfortunately, the longevity would have to be reviewed, perhaps expanding the plot and adding new scenes, but basically we can't see this feature as too debilitating. For the rest, as always, the conversion work is painstaking, and even its more action component (which in the original was struggling to come out due to the gameplay). Behind it all, however, I believe there is also a desire on the part of Capcom to redefine these old plots and make them more in line with the saga, now that this seems to be decidedly well marked (and almost far from those polygonal zombies of yesteryear).
