[SPOILER] Avengers Endgame: Joe Russo calms the curiosity of fans

How many times during this or that film have you wondered "why didn't this happen?" Avengers: Infinity War questions of this kind have sprung up in an avalanche. This time, however, one of the two directors replied to many questions during an interview, that is Joe Russo: In this busy Q&A session, the co-director clarified some of the thorniest issues of Avengers: Endgame. So let's find out more about what's behind the latest production of Marvel Studios.

ATTENTION: we warn you that much of what follows will contain spoilers regarding the film, and therefore we invite you to continue reading only if you have already seen the film.

Q: Why didn't Doctor Strange just cut off Thanos' arm?

A: Thanos' skin is nearly impenetrable and we don't know if Dr. Strange can cut it. If he failed to cut it, Thanos would snap his two fingers again. Strange will have seen this possibility in one of the many futures he had a vision of.

Q: Will Black Widow be resurrected when the Soul Stone is returned?

A: The process is irreversible. Even if you bring the Gem back to where you were, the sacrificed person does not come back to life. […] Black Widow is gone, forever.

Q: How did you make Thor fat and Steve Rogers old?

A: For Thor, there's a lot of CGI, he's the character who has suffered more losses than the others and has lived with constant pain and regret. For Steve it's 95% CGI and 5% make-up but the voice is 100% Chris Evans.

Q: What year is Captain America dancing with Peggy Carter?

A: I can't answer this question. This is a story that happened in an alternate reality, maybe it will be told later.

Q: Are there two Captain Americas now?

A: Steve's choice is to go back and live the life he always wanted to live. Time travel in this film created an alternate reality. He lived a completely different life and, of course, he helped others when needed. There are two Captain Americas in this reality but, as the Hulk said, what happened in the past has already happened. If you go back to the past, you create another reality. These characters create an alternate reality when they go back in time, but they do not affect the major events of the universe that we know of. What happened in the previous 22 films are still canon.

Q: Did Captain America encounter Red Skull on Vormir?

A: When Captain America returned to Vormir to return the Gem, Red Skull simply put it back in place waiting for another soul. They probably haven't even fought. That Red Skull isn't even the character in the first Captain America movie anymore, it's almost a different entity, a ghost. His past consciousness may or may not exist anymore.

Q: How did Thanos bring his army from the past into the future?

A: There's a guy named Ebony Maw in the movie and he's a great sorcerer. And Thanos is a genius.

Q: Could the Time Stone be used to bring Iron Man back to life?

A: If he had saved Iron Man, it wouldn't have changed the chance that Thanos would win the war. Among the 14 million possibilities seen by Dr. Strange, Iron Man's sacrifice was the only one capable of stopping everything.

Q: How does this 5-year time jump affect those who were 'pulverized'?

A: Those who survived the snap are 5 years older than the others, that's right. The only reason Spider-Man and his friends are still in high school is because they were as unfortunate as he was and pulverized. And of course there will be some of these friends who weren't pulverized and who are probably in college now. For those who have been pulverized, they are not aware of what happened 5 years earlier. They don't know what happened, it's like they've slept for a long time. The only one who knows what happened is Dr. Strange because he saw him while he was meditating on Titan. Parker's reunion with Ned is a touching moment. It's a complicated world now.

Q: So that rat that started Scott Lang's van saved the universe?

A: Yes, the mouse saved the universe! Among the many possibilities that Dr. Strange saw was one in which the rat did not turn on Scott's van and our heroes failed to bring it all back.

Q: How does time travel work in the film?

A: Both the Ancient and the Hulk are right. You cannot change the future simply by going back in time. But it is possible to create an alternate reality. Any decision made in the past could potentially create a new timeline. For example, that old Captain America has decided to live his married life in a different universe than the main one. He had to jump back into the main universe to give Sam the shield.

Q: Why didn't Black Widow have a funeral?

A: Have you forgotten the time when everyone is saddened by his sacrifice when they return from their respective time travel? Probably a funeral was done off-screen. Perhaps it will be shown in a future project, because there are so many stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet to be told.
