Ubisoft wants to focus on mobile gaming: are less triple A coming?

Ubisoft recently stated that it wants to diversify its productions in the near future. The French publishing giant wants to be less dependent on its triple A publications. The company has indeed claimed to want to have more free-to-play games in his stock, together with its current flagship production stable. Ubisoft is currently working on an Assassin's Creed mobile game with the investor Tencent. The CFO of the company, Frederick Duguet, said the company wants to give more space to titles on mobile devices:

We've been saying for several years that our model featured three or four AAA games, so we'll stick to that plan for fiscal year 2022. But we see we're progressively and continuously moving from a system that was only AAA-focused, to one that will see the simultaneous production of triple A titles and mobile gaming titles. In fiscal year 2022, we will continue our evolution from a model focused on AAA release towards a model in which AAAs are joined by new innovative premium and free-to-play experiences on other platforms. These diverse experiences will feed on each other through complementary gameplay and business models.

In recent years, in fact, the French software house has had some difficulties in releasing great titles, and this may have contributed to making this decision. In October 2019, the CEO of Ubisoft Yves Guillemot said Ghost Recon Breakpoint he hadn't met his expectations, before announcing that he would do his best to improve it. In the wake of this title's performance, Ubisoft said it was changing its development model. Since then, the company has delayed some of its triple A productions, such as Rainbow Six Quarantine, Gods and Monsters - that has become Immortals: Fenyx Rising - Watch Dogs Legion, Far Cry 6 and its remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This new policy could therefore lead to fewer major titles developed by Ubisoft in the coming years.
