FIFA 21: Ibrahimovic and other players will take EA SPORTS to court

In recent days there has been a lot of news about the criticisms from Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the licensing issue you would see included in FIFA 21, as in the previous chapters of the videogame series, other players who seem to have not given their consent to the treatment of their faces in the title. After the striker's Milan, also Gareth Bale stated that the decision whether or not to include the player with their own face in the title should ultimately rest with the players, and not with organizations such as the FIFA or the FIFPro.

Ibrahimovic was the first player, after years of silence, to investigate this confusing situation, especially thanks to the action of his agent Mino Raiola. The latter decided to bring FIFA to court, through the collection of testimonies of over 300 footballers who have decided to join this licensing dispute. The main motivation is to fight a system that would penalize the players, who see their face and characteristics used for commercial purposes without their authorization having ever been requested. In response, the developers of FIFA 21 Electronic Arts and EA Sports have declared that they have all the necessary permits to be able to use the players that are present within their titles, thanks above all to the partnership with FIFPro lobby, an organization, however, of which Ibrahimovic denies being a part.

It therefore seems that the quarrel between the FIFA title and the players, led by the Swedish champion, is very far from its conclusion. Although the faces of footballers have appeared in FIFA, and more generally in many of the football titles for many years, the fact that the controversy was born only in 2020 cannot but make us think of a mere economic question. We just have to wait to find out how everything will end, but we are sure that this is not the last episode.
