Final Fantasy VII Remake: the producer discusses the choices on Sephiroth

Final Fantasy VII Remake has finally made its debut very recently, you can find our review at the following link, managing to reproduce part of the chapter originally released in 1997. Being in all respects a Remake, Square Enix decided to take some courageous decisions during the construction phase, varying more or less small details to readjust the work to the present time, especially as regards the character of Sephiroth.

The following statements about Final Fantasy VII Remake may contain minor spoilers about the game, at least as far as Sephiroth is concerned. We therefore recommend that you pay particular attention when reading the following.

In the original work we know that the villain Sephiroth did not make his appearance already in the early stages of the game, but in the work of 2020 the arrival of the villain has been radically anticipated. For this reason, the producer Yoshinori Kitase has decided to provide explanations on this specific choice.

The way we handled Sephiroth within Final Fantasy VII was meant to hide it. You may not know this, but I was inspired by the movie Jaws, which takes the similar approach of anticipating a powerful presence, but doesn't show it to the later stages of the story. We wanted to build it as if it were really big and powerful in the minds of the characters. But simply referring to him indirectly created the sense of fear and oppression. So when it makes its first appearance, it's a really great show. But for the remake it doesn't work very well, partly because everyone knows who Sephiroth is! We thought it wouldn't be very effective to pull him back to the later stages of the story.
