Mindhunter 2 - Review of the Netflix crime TV series

After almost two years of waiting, the event series "Mindhunter”Returns with a surprising new season. The branded TV series Netflix will have the hard task of repaying the fans for the long wait. The second season of the show conceived by Joe Penhall is made up of nine episodes directed by the director David Fincher (Seven, Gone Girl) who will deliberately set aside the action part of the series to focus more on the dialogues. Mindhunter 2 starts from what was said and seen of the first season confirming (as if it were needed) the greatness of this series, which has now become a cult thanks to the perfect mix of historical reconstructions and refined psychological analyzes, where genres such as investigative and the dramatic one mixes perfectly.

Between old and new acquaintances

In this second season we find some of our knowledge, or the team of the FBI's behavioral sciences department, immediately at work to collect some statements from some serial killers. Strong also of the grants obtained thanks to a scientific project aimed at applying science in the crimes committed by serial killers, agents Bill Tench e Holden Ford (interpreted respectively by Holt mccallany e Jonathan Drew Groff) are intent on interrogating one of the most brutal killers the world has ever known: the serial killer Charles Manson. During the interrogation, the two are suddenly summoned to the city of Atlanta to investigate a series of murders and disappearances involving young African Americans. These events destabilized the city of Atlanta over a period from 1979 to 1981, not only because of the murders and disappearances, but also because the city of Georgia saw two African American men as mayor and chief of police. From here begins a ruthless manhunt that will mix the scientific theories applied to the more classic investigations of the local police. All this will unleash a real internal conflict in our two agents where the new scientific theories will inevitably clash with the instinct and the classic method of the agents.

The evolution of the crime genre

Mindhunter 2 has a very specific task, that is to show the viewer a real growth of the investigative department and the evolution of techniques, not only investigative, but also scientific ones, and how they are and will also be subsequently applied to the various cases which will involve the most ruthless serial killers. The series also touches on delicate themes such as racism and homosexuality, themes that are treated with the utmost tact and in an intelligent way. The case of the murders of very young people of color shows how racism is often used and exploited for purely political purposes, while the theme of homosexuality is treated with a beautiful message through the narration of the daily issues of Dr. Debbie - who does not see homosexuality as an obstacle - with the goal of seeking true love. All this regardless of any sexual orientation, age difference or skin color; in conclusion a love understood as a need that every human being should not just escape. The imprint of David Fincher can be seen entirely, and the move of a more introspective and dialogue-related reading, almost completely excluding the action part, repays him for this choice. The second season further raises the bar by introducing a product on the market that is difficult to beat for a hypothetical competition. The other TV series of the same genre will only be able to take inspiration from this show - now considered cult - considering that it is difficult to do better than what we have seen this season. Attention to detail seems to be the director's key to reading who, as he had already given us the opportunity to see in Zodiac (2007 psychological thriller he directed), he really leaves nothing to chance.
