Riot Games: the Australian office closes its doors

Riot Games: the Australian office closes its doors

Today, Riot Games officially announced that will cease its operations in Australia, closing then the doors of the Australian offices, dissolving theOceanic Pro League. This fact could compromise the professional activity of league of legends in the OCE region. Although there will no longer be the possibility for the team to participate in the professional competitive championship, there will still be qualifying tournaments for the Mid-Season Invitational and World Championship 2021 which will be held to send their teams to represent the region. Here are the words of the two directors, Malte Wagener e Tom Martell, followed by tweets from Jake Tiberi e Chris Smith:

Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of our teams and players, the Ocean Pacific League did not meet our goals for the championship. I don't think the market is currently able to support the league in its current form.

The OPL has been my source of income for 6 years. I started working full time for Riot in 2015 and have focused completely on what was my dream. I have participated in 5 world broadcasts and 4 MSI broadcasts. Today I feel nothing but sadness for everyone involved in League of Legends in OCE.

Crazy to see the dissolution of the OPL. I launched the first Legacy vs. Chiefs 5 years ago and I know there are so many talented people on the team and in the broadcast field over there. Thoughts go out to everyone, many great people working out the next steps

This decision was taken after the company managed to generate $ 1,5 billion of revenue in the year 2019. The news came through two tweets (which you can find at the bottom of the article) reporting, in broad terms, what was stated in the quotes above. Finally, we remind you that it was officially announced by Riot Games the new LoL Esports brand.

The OPL has been my livelihood for 6 years. I first started fulltime for Riot in 2015 and went full focus on what my dream was.

I have been apart of 5 Worlds Broadcasts and 4 MSI Broadcasts.

Today I feel nothing but sadness for everyone involved in League of Legends in OCE.

Crazy to see the dissolution of the OPL - @Atlustv & I cast the first ever OPL game of Legacy vs. Chiefs 5 years ago and I know there are so many talented people on the team and broadcast side over there.

Thoughts go out to everyone, lot of great people working out next steps https://t.co/Y0R5D9CQNj
