The Medium: Ray-tracing support and other details from Bloober Team

Expected to be released on January 28 2021 (but previously expected at the gate last December), psychological horror The Medium is one of the most anticipated titles in the videogame field. The game will be exclusive Windows 10 PC and Xbox Series X / S (Microsoft's next generation consoles) and will be offered "free" to all subscribers to the service Xbox Game Pass Ultimate o Xbox Game Pass for PC. Akira Yamaoka will be doing the soundtrack, and recently Jacek Zieba, Game Producer of Bloober Team, unveiled new details about the game at the wccftech.com portal.

The development team was asked what the substantial differences that distinguish The Medium, in terms of gameplay, from the other titles developed by the team such as Observer, Layers of Fear and Blair Witch. Here is the answer:

It's actually impossible to talk about The Medium and its gameplay without referring to the fact that players will experience two worlds at the same time. Dual Reality is not just a feature of the game, but rather the very foundation on which we built the game. Just like our other titles, The Medium is first and foremost a narrative game, but we have refined our storytelling in recent years allowing us to better combine our mechanical systems with the themes and narrative of the game, creating a completely cohesive and plausible title. . The Dual Reality system also allows for greater focus on player exploration as the unique point of view creates new opportunities for us designers, which can truly be felt when solving puzzles or surviving a confrontation with an evil spirit. It also offers us more ways to surprise the player and keep him on his toes, as he can never be sure when he will be in one world or both.

On the Ray tracing support in The Medium, Zieba added:

We have two Ray tracing modes supported for The Medium: Performance Mode which enables reflections and RTAO and Quality Mode which features reflections, RTAO, hybrid translucent and some RT shadows enabled for the entire game world. The latter is coupled with DLSS and a few other improvements from Nvidia but requires a lot of hardware power. The team is still working on optimizing The Medium on Xbox Series X and S and we will be able to share more details on these releases closer to launch.

As to why the developers decided The Medium was Xbox Series X / S and P exclusive), it was stated:

The choice was the result of our relationship with Microsoft, the hardware we needed to bring our vision to life and also the way our development process was in line with Microsoft's plans for its next generation of consoles. . The bottom line is that we are really excited to launch The Medium as one of the first Xbox Series X / S titles. The game will arrive on gaming machines in January and we are not currently focusing on other platforms.

The Medium is just one of the titles that will allow this cold month to be more interesting. As you will see in ours special dedicated to the releases of January 2021Indeed, many gamers are eagerly awaiting the likes of Hitman 3, Ride 4 and Everspace 2.
