In Dead Rising 3 there are 30 side missions that you can complete in addition to the main story ones.

Collateralist Guide

The Collateralist Objective of Dead Rising 3 asks us to complete at least 20 of the 30 side quests in the game. You will receive these missions as you progress through the campaign, usually receiving a call from other NPCs asking you to complete particular tasks, such as retrieving an item or escorting other survivors.

Side missions are timed. By going to the mission list you will be able to see how much time you have left to complete the mission. If time runs out, you will no longer be able to complete that mission unless you start a new game or reload the game from the last save.

Completing the side quests has several advantages: you will have new survivors to take to the shelter, you will discover new details on the plot and you will receive various rewards such as schemes for creating new weapons or prestige points.
