Cuphead, the review on PlayStation 4

With the Devil you do not mess around, but there Cuphead review on PlayStation 4 it will be an opportunity to take some more confidence. Cuphead, that's right, Cuphead again. Can't stand it anymore? Don't lie, come on. StudioMDHR's Chad and Jared Moldenhauer probably discovered the goose that lays the golden eggs when they released their title on PC in the now distant autumn of 2017. A production that immediately showed itself for what it was: delightful to see, hilarious to play, infamous like few other things in life, on the difficulty side.

Then again Cuphead: it was April 2019, when we brought you the review of Cuphead on Nintendo Switch. But it was still not enough, and then Cuphead again for the third time: let's go back to talking about it and to propose a second conversion, which arrived like a bolt from the blue (not a way of saying, it was really an unexpected lightning bolt in the clear sky of monotony. summer) even on PlayStation 4. This is the fate of numerous exclusives in the last five years: from console to PC, from PC to console, from console to console. All to the benefit of what really matters: gamers.

Conversion on PlayStation 4

This paragraph of the review, in which we will deal with the conversion of Cuphead on PlayStation 4, it will be extremely short, precise, concise. Indeed, we summarize it with a single sentence, light as a haiku: the porting of Cuphead on Sony consoles is excellent, whether it is a PlayStation 4 Standard, Slim or Pro. And this confirms for the second time a detail we already knew: the expertise of StudioMDHR, that insistent search for quality at all costs, which meant that your video game did not arrive anywhere else except in practically perfect conditions.

Cuphead, the review on PlayStation 4

After all, it took more than a year to see Cuphead on Nintendo Switch: but it "ran" in an excellent way. One more year for it to arrive on PlayStation 4: again "runs excellently". Here, too, the performance is about 1080p e i 60 fps, while (by choice) the animations of the characters remain at 24fps. Clearly never as in this case such numbers leave the time they find: in fact the only thing that is really necessary for Cuphead is the fact that it proceeds quickly, smoothly and without hesitation.

In fact, we have not even seen the shadow of sobs or interruptions, neither in the spectacular clashes against gigantic bosses nor in the most excited phases in run 'n' gun style. Also saves and uploads they last just a moment. The hatred that remains on him when he is defeated for the fourteenth time by that damned clown at the Luna Park, instead ... that lasts much longer.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course: Where did the DLC go?

What better time than the review of Cuphead on PlayStation 4 to return to question us on the DLC The Delicious Last Course? That the various ports took time away from the actual development of the expansion? Or has the DLC been moved "forward" just so that, in the meantime, players have time to retrieve the basic adventure on whatever platform they own?

Cuphead, the review on PlayStation 4

Assuming that the title conversions extended the development time of Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course, we should be there by now. L'expansion will introduce new levels and bosses, but above all the playable character of Ms. Chalice, with new moves and completely new patterns. Initially expected in 2019, the DLC has been postponed to 2020; and now it is only expected that it will be further postponed to 2021, in truth. After all, so far not even a new trailer has been shown, nor has any information arrived from the developers.

But all of this also makes sense from a marketing perspective. If Cuphead has landed on PC, then on Nintendo Switch and finally on PlayStation 4, it means that the user base has tripled; therefore potentially there will be triple revenues for the purchase of the DLC. Conversely, if Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course had really been published in 2019, the developers would then have had to include it within the ports for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, thus limiting revenues.

PlayStation 4 Trophies

Cuphead lands on PlayStation 4 with quite a few Trophies, including the Platinum Trophy. But if you think that adding them to your collection is easy, you are unwary unwary, or simply crazy. Know, for example, that you will have to complete the entire adventure at the maximum difficulty of the game. And also that you will have to get an A score against each boss. It will also depend on your skill with the specific genre of reference ... and your patience.

The gameplay: challenge the devil

But let's go back to the Cuphead itself, to the main adventure. This review began with some considerations on Diavolo (jokingly, of course, we have not yet become Satanists), and with just as many it will be concluded. We have already told you about the fact that Cuphead on PlayStation 4 is perfect, taken care of as much as all the other versions. So let's now underline how another aspect of the production has remained substantially unchanged: the brutal gameplay.

Cuphead, the review on PlayStation 4

Yes, because if Cuphead is immediately recognizable it owes it to a certain extent to its artistic direction, to its immediately recognizable characters, places and enemies. The title of StudioMDHR is difficult, damn difficult, especially when compared with any other vaguely similar production that has landed on the market in recent years. To embellish it is exactly this his gameplay, which requires attention, demands effort from the player, requires memorizing the behavior of enemies. And then it rewards it, of course. Each win on Cuphead is worth ten wins than any other video game. Because they are sweaty, you deserve. And when it comes to directly challenge the Devil (if, you do) ... but we won't be depriving you of the joy of discovery.

Every time we see Cuphead again, he is in better shape than before. It sparkled when it first appeared on PC; made gamers fall in love with himself on Nintendo Switch in the spring of 2019; now he will anger, excite, exalt even all the fans who were waiting for him (but without really hoping for it) on the PlayStation 4. The conversion is excellent, without defects, wherever even on the Sony home console you will fully enjoy the adventure in the company of Cuphead, Mugman and the many bosses who will try to make their skin. Now we can only look to the future and the next DLC, which will bring new adventures and Ms. Chalice to all consoles and PCs. In the meantime, roll up your sleeves: you have to throw down the Batraci Pugnaci, Cagney Carnation and company again, up to the Devil himself.
