Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game is based on the video game developed by Red Hook Studios in January 2016, Darkest Dungeon, a Rogulike RPG with incredibly dark and inspired graphic style turn-based combat that can sell beyond 4 million copies in its basic version and well 8 million taking into account the DLCs, released in the months following the launch. The board game's Kickstarted campaign was launched by Mythic Games, a company founded in 2015.
