Dylan Dog 403: The Blade, The Moon and the Ogre - Review

Back to the origins? It is not clear if this Dylan Dog is actually effective, but from how the publishing house explained and told us, Sergio Bonelli Editore, for this new Old Boy there will be a cycle of 6 issues in the first 6 months of 2020 which will represent the acronym “666”, in which they will show some of the compelling stories of the first issues of the nightmare investigator mixed with more recent stories. What will happen next? We do not know this and we just have to wait for the release of the new issue every month, to dig deeper and understand what will become of our Dylan. Here is the review of "The Blade, The Moon and the Ogre", the number 403.

Purely random references

Reading the first 2 albums you can see references not a little indifferent to our real everyday life, such as Dylan laughing at Groucho's jokes on television. It sounds trivial, but the Old Boy's not laughing even at his assistant's jokes - or as it is better to say former assistant - makes it a rewarding thing. And we can assure you that there will be plenty of “purely random” references to today's reality, and many will make you roll your eyes with joy. A small plus, but one that keeps reading very, very happy. But who is the new Dylan Dog? As we all know, 3 months have passed since the Meteor catastrophe, and not everyone has "recovered" from this upheaval. It is true that for some the comic is "dead" after issue # 100 (for others shortly after) but in reality it is not. Sure, "boring" sometimes, but that has always made us be in the front row at the newsstands to buy the next book.

After all, we all know who the "old" Dylan Dog was but instead have you wondered who is this new Dylan? Let's start with his physical appearance: the same as before, same clothes, same approach to life, but with a beard. Let's face it, the beard has its effect. Dylan still has the desire to play the flute, but he still can't do it. One thing that has not yet been talked about is the construction of the galleon: maybe they have removed it, or maybe they have already completed it and are thinking about what to build now. We love this Mystery.

A new world?

Speaking instead of the last cartoon of the end of issue # 400: what does the word "GNA" mean? But above all, who is that new character? Gnagos, the new assistant to our Nightmare Investigator. Dylan met him during his working stay in a remote village named Undead as the cemetery guardian, where he also heard and met his dear and old friend, Death. Obviously we do not hide from you that as soon as you start reading the deja-vu with the first numbers of the Nightmare Investigator will be frequent, beautiful memories, almost of a parallel universe. In fact, one of the most significant phrases comes in angel number 402 during the meeting with Xabaras:

I told you Mr. Dog, this is not the first time we meet… there are infinite realities and infinite worlds, some very similar, others profoundly different… but in each of these universes there is always a Dylan Dog and a Xabaras. Sometimes they are friends and allies, brothers, children, lovers and colleagues… more often they are adversaries, sworn enemies, opposite sides of the same coin, eternal nemesis of each other.

Dedicated to those who consider him dead ... how can you not assume that it is a parallel world of Dylan Dog? The new Phase 1 of the comic has just started!

As you have been able to read from the first two issues of the "new era", Dylan is always the same, former policeman, alcoholic, he easily falls in love with every woman that comes his way. The difference is that compared to the old Dylan you passed them over, he's - sorry, he was - very mysterious, we know all there is to know, for the moment. The presence of a father and a mother - they are not the real parents, from how he wanted to tell us he was adopted - that is the dear and big former Inspector and new Superintendent Bloch and his wife. Yes, you read that right. How is it possible? From Dylan's stories it is clear that he was a hooligan orphan, who got into trouble with his group of friends, and that our dear Bloch bailed out and eventually adopted him. For this gesture Dylan tried to reciprocate by being a policeman, but alas it was not exactly a success. He went to work in the remote place mentioned above, Undead, as a guardian of the cemetery, but soon after he returned to London taking with him his best friend and future assistant Gnaghi to be able to fight all the dark presences in that of London as Investigator of the Nightmare.

Dylan Dog 666 # 403: does history continue, or does it repeat itself?

In this new issue of our Old Boy we will go to a story that most likely we all already know, but not the new Dylan. Thanks to this register (remember that the release is scheduled for March 31, 2020) we find new traits from the past of our Nightmare Investigator that will make us savor old glories: with some jokes and / or dialogues, but above all a couple of quotes, wanted or not, that some fans of the sector will appreciate with great pleasure. So what will we find in this new issue? The beginnings, perhaps, of how our Dylan Dog is furnishing his "spooky house", in his opinion it affects customers. A very engaging story with fluid dialogue and zero forced interruptions, where everything always seems to run smoothly according to plan and where each of the main suspects will always be connected to his story, whether they want it or not. This number, as already specified above, will be part of a series of special books with the wording "666", at the top right of the writing "Dylan Dog", where we will trace the history of the very first years of activity as a Nightmare Investigator and redefine it completely.

The adventure stands out for its depth, with a man who reveals himself once again as the usual Latin lover, alcoholic and lover of horror cinema, in the company of new friends, new loves and ... new monsters. The halo of mystery is the same that we have also had the opportunity to test in the two previous books, with this series of episodes that dictates the rhythm flawlessly. Engaging, sometimes cryptic, which with its evergreen thickness leaves you with doubts and questions that only the next number can answer, and this number is not exempt.
