OBS Studio is an open source software aimed at creating live streams or screencasts that integrate monitor, microphone audio, PC audio and webcam. Being a program with open source, free and with different features, it is one of the programs we use the most in school.
One of the most frequent problems that arises when using OBS is that of black screen: access the software, set the “screen capture“, and the program does not capture what we see on the monitor.
This guide is generic tutorial for fixing black screen in OBS on Windows. If, on the other hand, you have an NVIDIA video card on your PC and the "NVIDIA Control Panel" software installed, you can use this specific guide. What's with the video card? The black screen issue is due to the use of GPUs. Laptops have more than one GPU to optimally handle high-performance and energy-saving tasks. The black screen results from conflict from multiple GPUs: that is, if OBS uses one GPU and the shared application (which can be the display, browser, a video game) uses another.
Configure OBS in power saving mode on Windows 10
1) Close OBS if open.
2) Open the Windows settings. If you are on Windows 10, go to the START menu and click on the settings symbol. If you don't have this icon, go to the next instruction.
3) Click on System. If you did not find the Settings option in the previous step, you can go directly to System by right-clicking on the Start icon. Open the Settings of Windows.
4) Click on the item "Screen".
5) Scroll down until you find the item “Graphic Settings“, then click on this item.
6) In the “Graphics Settings” panel, Click on the "Browse" button.
7) Look for the obs executable .exe file, and select it. Select the OBS Studio executable. The default paths are: C: Program Files obs-studio bin 64bit obs64.exe and C: Program Files (x86) obs-studio bin 32bit obs32.exe.
8) The OBS icon will now appear under the browse button. Click on OBS to open the panel with the buttons, then click on the "Options" button.
9) Select “Energy Saver”, then click on Save.
10) Start OBS.
Fix black screen in OBS in compatibility mode
1)Close OBS if open. When the program is closed, look for the executable file (obs.exe) in the installation folder. The default paths are: C: Program Files obs-studio bin 64bit obs64.exe and C: Program Files (x86) obs-studio bin 32bit obs32.exe).
2) Click with the right mouse button on the file to open the drop-down menu, then click on Properties.
3) The Properties panel will open. Go to the "Compatibility" tab".
4) Click on “Run this program in compatibility mode for” , under the heading "Compatibility Mode".
5) Select “Windows 7” in the drop-down menu.
6) Click on Apply.
7) Start OBS Studio.
Fix black screen in OBS by running it as administrator
Running the software as administrator, is another method to fix OBS black screen in studio. Here, you need to run this program as administrator. It aims to make use of all the functions of OBS. So, check out the following steps to run it as an administrator.
1) Close OBS if open. When the program is closed, look for OBS in your programs.
2) Right click on the program and click on Run as administrator.
Now start the program and run it as admin. The screen capture or window capture display will appear with an image.
Fix black screen for recording on Google Chrome
The problem may only appear in browser screen recordings, specifically the Google Chrome recording. In this case, you need to change the hardware accelerator settings.
1) Close OBS if open.
2) Open Google Chrome.
3) Go to settings, by clicking on the "Settings" item in the Chrome drop-down menu or by accessing the address chrome://settings
4) Search for “accelerator”. Just type in the first few letters.
5) Go to "Use hardware acceleration when available"
6) Try changing the option, for example unchecking it
7) Close Chrome, Start OBS and try recording the browser screen.
