Why Galaxy Note 10 Won't Charge and How to Fix

There can be many reasons why your Galaxy Note 10 won't charge. Below are some of the common causes for most charging problems on Samsung Galaxy devices:

  • Defective USB cable or adapter
  • Charging port malfunction
  • Moisture detected error or water in the port
  • Invalid app
  • Unknown software problem
  • Unknown motherboard problem

In this troubleshooting guide, we will show you how to fix charging problems on the Note 10.

1) Check the charging accessories

One of the most common reasons for charging problems to occur is faulty charging accessories. Just like the phone itself, the charging cable and adapter can also break. Be sure to check the accessories for visible signs of damage.

If the cable is broken or bent, it may not be enough to transfer power to the battery while charging. The same is true if the adapter, the item to which the other end of the cable connects, is not working properly.

To find out if the reason your Galaxy Note 10 won't charge is due to the cable or adapter is by using another set of accessories. If you have another family member who has a Galaxy Note 10 adapter and cable, use them to charge.

If your Note 10 charges normally, replace the ones you have. Make sure you buy genuine Samsung charging accessories to avoid damaging your Note 10.

Whenever possible, try to use official Galaxy Note 10 charging accessories. Other Samsung chargers may not be compatible with your Note 10 or may not be able to provide the fast charging capability of the Note 10 charger.

2) Charge the device

If you've confirmed that you now have a good working cable and adapter, start charging your Note 10 again. This time, make sure you charge your phone for at least 30 minutes before doing anything with it. We recommend that you turn off the phone for 30 minutes while it is charging. This should be enough time to fully charge the battery from 0-100%.

Sometimes, Android may lose track of actual battery levels. To recalibrate the operating system for accurate battery level readings, do the following:

  1. Fully discharge the battery. This means using the device until it turns itself off and the battery level is 0%.
  2. Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Make sure you are using the original charging equipment for your device and let it fully charge. Do not unplug the device for at least another two hours and also do not use it while charging.
  3. After the time has elapsed, disconnect the device.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Use the phone until it runs out completely.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5.

3) Inspect the charging port

If your Galaxy Note 10 still isn't charging, the next good thing to do is do a visual check on the charging port. You need to make sure that the port is clean and that there is no debris, dirt or foreign objects blocking the tip of the cable. If you see dirt or debris inside, use a can of compressed air to get rid of it.

Avoid inserting anything into the port as this may damage the system.

4) Force restart the Galaxy Note 10

Sometimes charging problems can be caused by a small glitch in the software. This situation can be solved by restarting the device. If you haven't tried it yet, be sure to do it this time. Try restarting it normally first by pressing the power button to enter the boot menu. Then, select the Restart option and see if it works.

Another way to restart the device is to hold down the Volume Down button and the Power key at the same time for 10 seconds or until the device screen turns on. This simulates the effect of disconnecting the battery from the device. If it works, this could unlock the device.

If regular rebooting doesn't help, try this:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button first and don't release it.
  2. While holding it down, press and hold the Power key.
  3. Press and hold both buttons for at least 10 seconds.

The second reboot procedure attempts to simulate the effects of battery removal. On older devices, disconnecting the battery is often an effective way to fix unresponsive devices. If nothing has changed, move on to the next tips.

Regular restarting of the device at least once a week can be helpful. If you tend to forget things, we suggest you set up your phone to reboot by itself. You can schedule this task to run by doing the following:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Device Care.
  3. Tap point 3 at the top.
  4. Select Automatic restart.

5) Restart your Galaxy Note 10 in safe mode

If your Galaxy Note 10 started having charging issues after installing a new app, you may have a third party problem. The best thing you can do in this case is to try restarting your phone in safe mode. In safe mode, all third-party apps are suspended and cannot be run.

If you don't remember the app, try restarting your device in safe mode and see what happens. So if the problem only goes away in safe mode, that clearly indicates that the cause is a faulty third-party app. To start your device in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power button until the Shut Down window appears, then release.
  2. Touch and hold Power off until the Safe Mode prompt is displayed, then release.
  3. To confirm, tap Safe Mode.
  4. The process can take up to 30 seconds to complete.
  5. Upon restart, “Safe Mode” appears in the lower left of the main screen.
  6. Charge the phone in safe mode.

Remember that third-party apps are disabled in this mode, so what you can use are pre-installed apps. If Galaxy Note 10 charges normally in safe mode, it means that the problem is due to a faulty app.

Uninstall the app you recently installed and see if it will fix it. If the problem persists, use the elimination process to identify the rogue app. That's how:

  1. Boot into Safe Mode.
  2. Check the problem.
  3. Once you've confirmed that a third-party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling the apps individually. We recommend starting with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After uninstalling an app, restart your phone in normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your Galaxy Note 10 still doesn't charge normally (but works in safe mode), repeat steps 1-4.

6) Check for detected moisture errors or water damage

Will you get a moisture detection error every time you try to charge? If so, the charging port is wet or contains traces of moisture. Clean your phone and let it dry for a few hours before charging again.

The Galaxy Note 10 has an IP68 rating, which means it is resistant to water and dust. However, this resistance is not absolute and can be compromised if you do not take care of the device. While your phone may be splashed with water, it is not recommended to swim or dive with it.

You don't want to intentionally drop it into a pool or ocean just to check the effectiveness of the IP68 rating. Sometimes, this protection may not work as advertised.

In case you have accidentally exposed the device to water, one of the things you want to do is wipe it immediately with a clean, soft cloth to dry it outside. Hence, you want water to drip from the exposed charging port.

If there is moisture or water in the port, the device will not charge at all. This is to prevent it from shorting, which can fatally damage its electronic components. In this case, what you want to do is dry the phone completely by wiping it and letting the water run out.

The water naturally evaporates at room temperature after a few hours, so leave the device. DO NOT attempt to speed up the drying process by blowing into the door. This can potentially push moisture inside and cause a problem.

7) Factory reset Galaxy Note 10

If your Galaxy Note 10 still refuses to charge at this stage, you need to consider resetting its software to factory defaults. This is the final solution you can do to check if the cause of the problem is software related. Make sure you create a backup of your personal data before cleaning your phone.

Below are two ways to factory reset your Galaxy Note 10:

Method 1: How to hard reset on Samsung Galaxy Note 10 via Settings menu

This is the easiest way to erase your Galaxy Note 10. all you need to do is go to the Settings menu and follow the steps below. We recommend this method if you have no problem going into Settings.

  1. Create a backup of your personal data and remove your Google account.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Scroll and tap General Management.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Select Factory data reset from the options provided.
  6. Read the information, then tap Reset to continue.
  7. Tap Delete all to confirm the action.

Method 2: How to hard reset on Samsung Galaxy Note 10 using hardware buttons

If your phone turns on but the Settings menu isn't accessible, this method can be helpful. First, you need to boot your device into recovery mode.

After successfully logging into recovery, it's time to begin the correct master recovery procedure. It may take a few tries before you can access Recovery, so be patient and just try again.

  1. If possible, create a backup of your personal data in advance. If your problem is preventing you from doing this, simply skip this step.
  2. Also, you want to make sure that you remove your Google account. If your problem is preventing you from doing this, simply skip this step.
  3. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can't shut it down, you'll never be able to boot into recovery mode. If you are unable to turn off your device regularly via the power button, wait until your phone's battery runs out. Then, charge your phone for 30 minutes before starting recovery mode.
  4. Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Bixby button at the same time.
  5. While still holding the Volume Up and Bixby keys, press and hold the Power button.
  6. The recovery screen menu will now be displayed. When you see this, release the buttons.
  7. Use the Volume Down button until “Wipe Data / Factory Reset” is highlighted.
  8. Press the power button to select “Wipe data / Restore factory settings”.
  9. Use Volume Down to highlight Yes.
  10. Press the power button to confirm the factory reset.

8) Use the wireless charger

The Galaxy Note 10 is capable of wireless charging. If you're just having trouble with wired charging, you can switch to wireless charging. While not ideal as wireless charging is slower than wired charging, it is an option you can take to keep the system alive.

Maybe you want to create a backup of your files before visiting your local Samsung store but the phone is already low on battery. In this situation, you can try using wireless charging to recharge the battery. Wireless charging is really useful especially if the problem is caused by an incorrect charging port.

The Official Samsung Wireless Charger for Note 10 is a separate item and must be purchased separately. Visit your Samsung store to get one.
