You've just seen the presentation of a Mac software in which the user, in addition to his computer desktop, also filmed himself, in a box located in one of the corners of the screen: a really nice effect, right? So why don't you try to make something similar yourself? I assure you it is very simple.

Now there are several applications, even free, for record mac screen and many of them allow you to shoot the macOS desktop and the webcam at the same time, creating that nice effect we were talking about just now. Now I'll point out some of the most interesting ones currently available "on the market", briefly explaining how to use them. You will be surprised by the quality of the videos you will be able to obtain and, above all, by the simplicity with which you will be able to obtain them.

Note: when you start screen recording (or export recordings you've already made) the computer is put "under strain" and this causes the fans to spin more strongly. Therefore, if your Mac becomes noisier for a few minutes, don't worry, this is an absolutely normal thing: it serves to prevent the computer from overheating and damage to the internal components. Obviously this does not apply to fanless MacBook models, which do not have fans inside them.

How to record Mac screen for free

If you're using macOS 10.14 (Mojave) or later, you can record mac screen free with the application Screenshot, which is the default one of Apple's home operating system for screen capture.

To bring up Screenshot, open the Launchpad selecting the relative icon (the one with i colored squares) that you find on Dock bar, access the folder Other and select l 'icona dell'applicazione (Quella with the camera inside the square open on the sides).

A toolbar with various buttons will then open. Those dedicated to making videos are the fourth and fifth: one allows you to capture the entire screen of the Mac, the other a portion of it to be selected with the mouse.

If you want record mac screen with audio coming from the microphone or for record mac screen with headphones, click the button first options that you always find on the application toolbar, click on the menu Microphone and select the name of the reference device. Always after clicking the button options you can also choose to make mouse clicks visible by selecting the option show mouse click from the menu options.

After configuring the operation of Screenshot, click on the button Register and make your video. At the end of the registration, press the button Stop appeared on the Screenshot toolbar or by clicking on the one that in the meantime has been added to the macOS menu bar and the movie will be automatically saved in the location where screenshots are also saved (the desktop, by default), in MOV format.

After that, click on the menu Fillet at the top left and select the item New screen recording from the latter. At this point, if you are using macOS 11.0 (Big Sur) or later versions, you will see the same Screenshot controls appear, so you can continue by following the same instructions that I gave you in the step at the beginning of the guide.

If, on the other hand, you are using a previous version of macOS, the QuickTime Player window dedicated to screen recording will be shown to you. At this point, if you also want the audio to be recorded, click on dart down and then up the voice Built-in Microphone: Internal microphone that you find in the menu that appears.

If you deem it necessary, you can also decide to make clicks made with the mouse visible, also select the item Show mouse clicks in recording. Now, to start the full desktop capture click anywhere on the screen (or press the button Rec attached to the QuickTime Player screen), while if you want to record only a portion of it, click on a defined point on the screen and, holding down, draw a square or rectangle on it.

When you are done, click on the button Stop that appears in the Mac menu bar and wait for the captured video to be visible. By default, the file is saved in MOV format to the macOS desktop.

If you want, you can also view the video using the buttons attached to the player, while if you need to save the file in a different format you can do so by accessing the menu Fillet, then to that Export as and making your choice from there.

How to Record Mac Screen with OBS

If the default macOS tools didn't satisfy you, I suggest you try a record Mac screen with OBS. In case you've never heard of it, Viewer discretion (Acronym for Open Broadcaster Software) is an excellent free and open source software that allows you to record (or broadcast "live") the computer screen. Among its main features, we must mention the extreme simplicity of use and the ability to include webcam shots in the recordings. Also, you can use it for record mac screen with internal audio (provided you previously install the programs to record the internal audio of the Mac) and for record mac screen without external audio.

To use OBS on your Mac, connect to the relevant official website and then follow the instructions on how to download, install and run the first setup of the program that I have provided you in my specific guide on the subject.

Once the main software window is displayed, click on the button Settings located at the bottom right, select the item Dismissal from the sidebar and choose from the drop-down menu Exit mode the voice Simple.

Then indicate the folder in which to save the recordings by clicking on the button Shop by Department next to the field Registration path and set in the drop down menu Recording quality the option Same as live, then the video format of the recording via the drop-down menu Recording format. To save the changes, press the buttons Apply e OK.

Then take care to indicate to the program the sources to use to capture the videos, by pressing the button capacitor positive (+) lead below the box Sources, choosing the voice Capture the screen from the menu that appears and clicking on the button OK twice. Next, move and/or resize the desktop box in the OBS window to include the area of the screen that interests you.

If you want to add the webcam one to the screen recording, click on the button capacitor positive (+) lead which is under the field Origini, select the voice Video capture device from the menu that appears and press the key OK twice. Then proceed to modify the preview of the screen to be captured, manually moving the webcam frame to the point you prefer.

If you want to record a video of your screen including audio, press the button againcapacitor positive (+) lead in the box Sources e scegli l'opzione Capture incoming audio or that one Capture the output audio.
