Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales - Insomniac flexes its muscles on PS5

Marvel's Spider-Man it was undoubtedly one of the most prominent exclusives on PlayStation 4. The license plate work Insomniac Games, famous authors of the saga of Ratchet e Clank, was the best-selling exclusive ever in the USA, a success that, when added to sales in other countries, would allow it to exceed the mammoth sum of 13 million copies distributed worldwide. Driven by this huge success, Sony has decided to give fans a taste of the PlayStation 5 passing from the talent of the US house, offering to the public Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The short trailer presented at the event, however, in addition to fueling the hype of the fans, has shifted attention to another important question: what is the game? He thought about answering precisely this question Simon Rutter, Sony's VP head of European Business, who commented on the issue describing the product as a real expansion and enhancement of the title. Within this experience there will be a substantial component dedicated to Miles, but changes have been made to both the gameplay and the graphics engine, implementing some of the main technologies and features of the new console. Basically, the commercial initiative will move along the lines of what has been seen in Uncharted: Eridity Perdua o Infamous: First Light.

Where were we?

Let's take a quick step back, as many of you may not have all of Marvel's Spider-Man well stamped. In the videogame universe created by Insomniac, Miles is the son of Jefferson Davis, a policeman that we will meet during the main story of the game. However, a terrorist attack caused by demons will force the man to an untimely death, leading a still young son to face a huge bereavement. Peter will take the boy under his protective cobweb, so much so as to confide in him his true identity. If you have played the dedicated DLCs, you will have seen that it all ends with Peter intent on giving Miles lessons on how to become Spider-Man. From the trailer we can therefore see - not with much surprise, to be honest - that the boy's dedication has borne fruit, so much so that it resembles the real Spider-Man in almost everything.

The film focuses on the moves of the young Miles, well choreographed and in line with the style of the character. Precisely these could give the experience greater variety, with the main focus however shifted to the powers of the superhero instead of just gadgets. The footage in this sense seems unmistakable, Miles in addition to the classic skills of Spider-Man can become invisible and hit enemies with powerful electric shocks. Obviously there is a background New York, but we don't think it will be changed drastically. The presence of snow, however, suggests a strong change at least from an artistic point of view, and it is not certain that this element will not have repercussions on the gameplay as well. Regardless, the sequences of images chosen to present the game give the idea that the new production will have a much darker tone, making more use of the night hours than its predecessor. The stealth phases have not yet shown, but we believe that between now and the release we will have more information about it.

Not just Spider-Man

The trailer, however, does not intend to show only Miles, or rather, it scatters small clues that could be decisive for the understanding of the whole. In the video it is clear how the protagonist gets rid of some mysterious enemies without too many problems, drawing our attention to this new threat. We were also able to admire a sequence on a collapsing bridge, in full Spider-Man style, making the audience understand that the intent will be to recreate and enlarge the winning formula used in the first game. These segments, in fact, they combined in an excellent way the playful mechanics to the most classic scenes of the Marvel films.

What has just been said, however, could be a double-edged sword, given that there is a risk of repeating what has already been done in the past. The real challenge will be not only to convince on a narrative and technical level, but also to propose a product that can fully justify its purchase. Being a stand alone chapter, we hope that the defects of the first have been filed, paving the way for the real Marvel's Spider-Man sequel.

Future events

Ok, now it's clear: in New York there are two Spider-Man assets. While Insomniac didn't mention Peter Parker in the trailer, it's easy to guess that he's going to be there in some way. But what will happen after Miles' adventure? If our beloved Peter will have a long life, it cannot be excluded that the development house is in a sense preparing us to control two characters in view of the truth. Marvel's Spider-Man 2. This is obviously only a theory, since the narrative plots could lead one of the two even away from New York. However, the big apple's excessive redundancy may be too much; for this reason we believe that in the future, if the city that will be the backdrop to the events were to be this again, the software house could make substantial changes to the map and enlarge it by a lot, proposing additional districts such as Brooklyn and Queens. However, these are only suppositions, since we do not have any kind of confirmation.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales basically has all the features that would allow the title to be a great trailblazer for the new Sony generation. The game as we know will arrive in winter, in the course of 2020, and we believe it is reasonable to expect it already at the launch of PlayStation 5. As things currently stand, we can't wait to take on the role of Spider-Black (quote obviously addressed to the costume), spin among the skyscrapers of Manhattan and kick the villains with new powers.
