Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales - Preview, there's another spider in town

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales was announced a few months ago (here our in-depth analysis) with a very short clip but, during the event dedicated to PlayStation 5, there was a way to take a closer look at the new title Insomniac Games, out on both PS4 and PS5 on November 19th, same day the new console will be available Sony. The game will therefore be in effect the first cross-gen title, but on PlayStation 5 it will naturally present some unique features. The work does not represent in all respects the direct sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man seen on PlayStation 4, but it should be seen as a commercial operation in the style of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which is a stand-alone title capable of engaging fans with a new story and mechanics. Furthermore, the Spectacularity of the wall climber lends itself very well to immediately test the muscles of the PlayStation 5, giving a very clear idea of what to expect in the future.

A new protagonist

After having had the opportunity to play, albeit for short sections, in the role of Miles Morales already in the first Marvel's Spider-Man, Insomniac Games has finally decided to dedicate an entire chapter to him in which we will have the opportunity to deepen its history and motivations. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales begins exactly one year after the original chapter. However now Miles seems far more experienced and confident, enough to wear his own suit and able to control his powers very well. The training done with Peter must have paid off, but in some ways we expect to control a still immature Spider-Man, so we hope to be able to come into contact with big surprises as the plot progresses. Although the scenario of the adventure is always New York, the affected neighborhood this time will be Harlem, all covered in a splendid snow cover.

Young Miles will then move between snowflakes and crime, intent on stopping a dangerous conflict during his mother's election campaign between the military company Roxxon and the group Underground, a criminal force well equipped with super technologies. The latter are also led by The Tinkerer, which for some will be an old acquaintance but for others represents a villain to be discovered. These factional tensions will seriously endanger the lives of citizens, with Miles then having to take action to save the whole situation. Since we played the chapter on PS4, it seems strange to us that Insomniac will not present other enemies within the adventure, besides those revealed for now. However, the role of the Oscorp, and consequently of Norman Osborn, as the triggering cause of the events, given that in all probability this new game will be the real springboard for the future of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Unique skills and techniques

While we haven't seen a lot, in the Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales trailer we got a first and portentous taste of gameplay. All the peculiarities of the protagonist such as electric shocks, invisibility and shoots cobwebs, they will be handled by new interfaces, very clean and do not bother in the slightest. For those who do not know, in fact, the young man Miles was bitten by a very different spider than Peter did, giving him completely different and, in some ways, much more lethal skills. Although the invisibility wears out really quickly, the electric discharges are quite central in the footage shown by Insomniac, which in fact seem to be implemented in the combo system. This power is used by the boy to destroy and immobilize enemies, with imaginative combinations and very creative area damage from a scenic point of view.

Basically it will be very interesting to see how the development of Miles proceeds; the first Spider-Man was very attached, in addition to skills, also to the gadgets that the wall climber could use. This peculiarity has not yet been shown, but we believe that the team has focused on other aspects regarding Miles' Spider-Man. also so as not to make the two heroes look like a copy of the other. In the trailer, we have the maximum exaltation in the moment of the fall of the bridge, when our Spider-Man finds himself not only stopping the rubble, but also saving as many civilians as possible in a truly exalted and well-structured sequence. Although they have not been shown explicitly, we are sure that in some places there was some Quick Time Event, almost mandatory and not at all out of context for a title like this. The QTEs were also present in the first chapter and were masterfully inserted in points where they left the user a real state of exaltation.

Waiting for the launch

From a technical point of view we can say very little, but the whole sequence seemed fluid and cohesive to us, we do not doubt its quality at the moment of its release. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales definitely won't be a real killer app, but in its own way represents an important meeting point between the present and the next generation. In fact, on the day of PS5 launch, players will not be forced to rely solely on Demon's Souls, but this represents a valid alternative to still offer something new to all users. After all, such a scenic production lends itself perfectly to showing the muscles of the new console right away, and we personally do not doubt the immense quality of Insomniac Games. We doubt that something more substantial will be shown about two months after the release of the new consoles, but at present the inexperienced Miles could come out as big as he did with his friend Peter.
