On the night of February 24 will take place the 91esima edition of the largest festival dedicated to the world of cinema and entertainment, or the Oscar Academy Awards 2019. However, this edition (perhaps more than others) has generated a series of controversies and disputes among the public aimed precisely atAcademy, proponent, according to most, of some choices that incontrovertibly diminish the role of some figures in the world of cinema.
Favorites and snubs of the night
Like any self-respecting competition, even the Oscar have their share of predictions and favorites for the nominations of the golden statuette. This year there are among the favorites Rami Malek e Christian Bale. The former rose to prominence mainly for the series Amazon Prime Video Mr. Robot and earned the nomination for the Oscar 2019 for his masterful interpretation of Freddy Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. The second, on the other hand, is mainly appreciated for its interpretation of Dick Cheney in Vice - The man in the shadows.
However, it was not the confrontation between these two great actors that generated part of the discussion, but the composition of the nominations, in particular as regards the awards for the best soundtrack and the one for the best song. In the first case, the film was excluded First Man which in terms of soundtrack needs no introduction, and in the second case the song was excluded Suspirium di Thom Yorke, for the majority of the audience deserving of a nomination.
Other talk instead was made for the 6 nominations for the film Marvel Studios Black Panther, released on January 29 last year and nominated, among all prizes, for the best film. At the moment we can't know if the film will win at least one of these six prizes or if it will win them all, but it is still a big coup for Marvel Studios, responsible for having produced a film worthy of Oscar (in addition of course to Avengers: Infinity War, candidate for Best Special Effects).
Criticism of the Academy
Among the various controversies raised against the Academy, in recent days those criticizing the choice of ABC not to have a presenter during the evening of the Oscar. In fact, as in 1989, not even this year's edition will have a comic face that will entertain the public between one award ceremony and another with some jokes and gags.
In recent times, there has also been a lot of talk about other decisions taken by theAcademy, especially for a particular issue that has given rise to the web, namely the recent matter of the prizes awarded during the advertising of the broadcast dedicated to the award ceremony.
In fact, recently it was decided that the awards to best editor, the director of photography, the animated short film and the one for make-up they must undergo this inglorious treatment in the name of the longevity of the program, reduced to 3 hours.
This decision by theAcademy literally blew up the Internet, and the negative reaction was so strong that the organizers themselves denied everything by reconfirming the delivery of these prizes during the broadcast (as per tradition). Moreover, this confirmed the fact that the choice would not only have been wrong, but also disrespectful towards such professional figures.
As proof of the rudeness that these very important figures of the cinema were about to suffer, he even intervened Guillermo del Toro, to underline the importance of these experts within the chain of creation of cinematographic works.
Perhaps the latter point is the most important of all, which once again underlines how respect and form for events such as Oscar are actually not to be underestimated. After the question of the exclusion of the works Netflix e Amazon Prime Video from the award ceremony, this last “fall in style” accentuates the fact that, despite the rectification, the general public does not like certain choices that are decidedly too little to define disrespectful.
