Proof of Forza: Forza Motorsport 7 review on PC

Forza Motorsport 7 is an extraordinary driving game, a benchmark in the field of simcades and a product extremely rich in content. The latest effort of Turn 10 stands as the perfect title to flex the muscles of Xbox One X, the new Microsoft console arriving on November 7, but those who have a PC with an adequate configuration can try this driving experience in advance at the maximum of its capabilities, at real 4K and with an effects probably superior to what we will see in action on the next platform of the Redmond house - except for anti-aliasing. And so, after playing the game for several hours on Xbox One S, we finally got our hands on the Windows 10 version.

Disruptive impact

Forza Motorsport 6: Apex gave us a taste of the potential of the Universal Windows Platform when used with certain products and in an optimal way (because, let's remember, things didn't always go well in the debut), but we were not prepared for a visual impact of the type. The graphics of Forza Motorsport 7, while very valid in the upscaled Ultra HD of Xbox One S, take on new life on PC thanks to the real 4K and ultra settings that our configuration has allowed us to use. The detachment is clear, the level of detail is absolute but above all it is the quality of the cars competing beyond ours that is surprising, given that the traditional difference in terms of effects and sharpness is missing between the vehicle we control and those entrusted to the artificial intelligence.

We are actually talking about limitations that on Xbox One X we could find, after all, somewhere the console will have to set aside the necessary resources to avoid frame rate drops in the most agitated situations. It is in fact when there are all the cars on the screen, it rains heavily and we throw ourselves madly towards a barrier that the engine struggles, losing a few frames; something that on the new Microsoft console we imagine will not happen precisely thanks to some renunciation, whether small or large. However, even here it is enough to lighten the GPU load by a minimum to eliminate the problem, relying on the convenience of the dynamic approach, which instantly changes the resolution or any of the presets to keep the reference frame rate steady (30 or 60 frames per second. , in both cases with or without vertical synchrony), or by manually selecting the items that interest us.

The options in this regard are extremely numerous and open to a wide scalability even downwards, which some publications have already verified. You can first adjust the resolution, from 720p to 2160p, set the overall rendering quality up to ultra and change the parameters related to dynamic optimization. The latter include multisampling / downsampling (which if desired allows you to reach up to 8K real), the anisotropic filter, the quality of the motion blur and shadows, the resolution of the particles, the procedural quality, of the liveries, of the mirror, of the cars in track and particle again, water reflections, anti-aliasing (MSAA only available), lens and windshield reflections, track textures and general reflections. A note for the smoke produced by the tires during hard braking and drifting: there are obvious artifacts that we had missed on the Xbox One S, perhaps due to the lower resolution, and we hope that the developers can fix this through an update.

Said this, we were able to set the resolution to real 4K as anticipated and all parameters to the maximum, enjoying an experience that maintains 60 frames per second without any problem, without prejudice to the extreme situations mentioned above or the multiplayer races, although in the latter case the question probably depends on the netcode, not yet very stable according to our tests even in a Windows environment. The support for HDR is only the proverbial icing on the cake of an excellent technical sector, able to greatly enhance the panoramas and bright contrasts during the day. There has been a lot of talk about the Forza Motorsport 7 weather and the script that would seem to regulate its variations: waiting for a possible clarification from Turn 10, we reiterate how the lighting of this new episode gives the tracks unprecedented charm and personality, even those repeated several times in the course of the series: a not just result. The last technical issue to be addressed are the uploads, also substantially improved compared to the Xbox One version: if on the console it takes on average forty seconds for the system to prepare a scenario for the race, using an SSD on the PC, the times of waiting are reduced by a good 25-30%.

Gameplay and structure

Closed the discussion on the technical implementation on PC, remains the reality of an extremely solid driving game in its driving model, capable of balancing the needs of accessibility and realism of the fans of the genre in the best possible way, also scalable in the degree of challenge thanks to a large number of aids and assists that can of course be deactivated. Compared to the previous chapter, which on the Windows platform never arrived in its official capacity, the movement of loads has improved and the wet sessions have now reached a level of excellence: when running in the rain, with the gradients filling up. gradually of water, the reactions of the car are emphasized and this must be taken into account, especially when braking.

Beyond this, each car tells a different story, which goes beyond the categories to which it belongs, and considering the fleet consisting of over seven hundred models we will have experiences to try. Invariably some vehicles are better represented than others, but the general level is very high and, in case of problems, it is always possible to use the "rewind" function, which makes the time run backwards if a serious mistake has been made, perhaps at a few meters from the final finish line of a sweaty race. As also written in the review of the Xbox One version, we did not appreciate the homologation system, that is the automatic optimization of the cars to meet the requirements of each event, depriving users of the pleasure of putting their hand to tuning manually: it is still possible to do this, but the developers have made this practice counterintuitive and cumbersome, which is a real shame. Nothing to say instead from a structural point of view: the career of Forza Motorsport 7 is huge, it spans within five different leagues that are unlocked gradually and offers very different events, thus guaranteeing a certain variety of situations.

Each championship is composed of a variable and growing number of tournaments and individual challenges, the completion of which guarantees the necessary experience points to level up and thus obtain credits, personalizations for the driver or new cars. It is precisely the element of collecting that represents the fulcrum of the experience, so much so that it is regulated by a special indicator: The more vehicles we own, the better. To speed up the progression it is possible to use the Modifications, cards to be equipped during a race bearing particular conditions which, if met, guarantee a multiplication of the rewards. The fact that the Modifications are obtained through the purchase of the Prize Boxes has made many people turn up their noses, but we emphasize once again how this practice is ancillary to the basic experience: it is an additional possibility, not of a limiting constraint for those unwilling to spend more money. Speaking of limits, unfortunately some modes are not yet available (the online leagues, the Forzathon challenges, the marketplace), so the outline for the moment is limited to free races, selecting the car and one of the thirty-two available scenarios as desired, with relative weather conditions (only some tracks, however, boast the possibility to choose between day, night and rain), to the aforementioned multiplayer and to the Rivals mode, in which to compete with the ghost of users who have made better times than ours, in the attempt to climb the global leaderboard.

The PC version of Forza Motorsport 7 boasts all the sensational qualities we've already enjoyed on Xbox One: a solid and compelling driving model, a rich and varied career, a huge fleet of cars and a rich set of tracks, rendered more interesting and evocative with variable weather and HDR support. However, a decisive extra gear is represented by the technical sector, of absolute excellence: if you have an adequate configuration, playing at real 4K and 60 frames per second, using dynamic adjustments or perhaps setting all the effects to the maximum, will give you an experience. absolutely spectacular driving, which clearly detaches the excellent graphics of the console edition. Waiting to see what Xbox One X will be able to do, in exactly one month.
