ROG Phone 3 - Review of the top-of-the-range gaming phone

Despite having already innovated the phone market with his ROG Phone I, Asus it later dabbled in further official reinterpretations. Let's talk about the ROG Phone II, which has set new standards for mobile gaming, raising the possibilities of gamers in this area to the nth degree. The world of video games on smartphones is still in full development, but the company has decided to immediately focus its energies on the latter, proposing models that are also perfect for the new titles that will make their debut on the store for phones. Its latest innovation in this area is the very new one ROG Phone 3.ROG Phone 3 - Review of the top-of-the-range gaming phone

We are dealing with a new reinterpretation that does not differ particularly from the previous model, but that aims to expand its possibilities, following the line of extreme quality started with the first branded smartphone Republic of Gamers. It is therefore clear that the goal to which Asus aims is the pinnacle of top-of-the-range devices, which is intended to use the article simply for video games or as a classic phone capable of performing all daily actions with extreme speed. So let's find out what its additions and shortcomings are, as well as its potential for consumers.

The ROG Phone is ready to impress us

To welcome us in our top of the range experience we find a package rather extravagant, with an aggressive and well-made design, which in addition to the phone contains several items to consider. We start with theAeroActive Cooler 3, new model of the accessory dedicated to the dissipation of the device, which is not absolutely necessary during the hours of use given the excellent integrated cooling system, but which allows the use of the jack port (not included as base in the body) and improves no doubt the temperatures. We also find gods rubber pads to cover cables for unused ports, Over which the 30W power supply, a cable of USB-C to USB-C, a plastic bumper cover of excellent quality and a USB-C to jack adapter. Between 5G e Dual band Wi-Fi 6 wireless links have not been neglected either.

The body of the phone is really solid and large, given the presence of the panel from 6,59 inches. The weight is unfortunately a relevant factor, this also given by the rather accentuated thickness, and it is clear that the device is not designed for use with a single hand, which is obviously possible but sometimes uncomfortable. Given the presence of such a large display, Fortunately, however, there is no lack of features dedicated to interactions with two hands. One above all concerns the Air Trigger placed on one of the two long sides, excellent for playing or for some comfortable associations during more classic use. Speaking instead of the main panel, we find a AMOLED with resolution of 2340 × 1080, little more than Full HD, accompanied by technology HDR10 + and a maximum refresh rate of 144hz, the best of the best in telephony. The feedback during use is therefore truly sensational, since the fluidity is also accentuated by the latency to the touch of 25 milliseconds and from 270hz sampling.ROG Phone 3 - Review of the top-of-the-range gaming phone

The phone's camera is clearly not in line with the top-of-the-range models on the market, as the device is meant for other features: however, this is still pretty good. The front from 24MP allows the recording of videos in Full HD at 60 fps of good quality, thanks also to the technologies used for image enhancement. The 64MP triple main camera offers several functions, including digital zoom up to 8X, although for both it would have been possible in some ways to offer better color accuracy.

No compromise

As for the internal components, nothing has really been left to chance. The processor Snapdragon 865 Plus Octa Core 3,1 Ghz makes the device extremely performing, thanks also to the video card Adreno 650 which can have 12 or 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM depending on the model, but which is obviously more than enough in both cases nowadays. Unfortunately, it is not possible to insert a SIM to expand the memory from 512GB or 256GB (again depending on the model), which is a big drawback of the device. There 6.000 MAh battery allows ultra-fast charging (even with the supplied charger), but the phone does not allow the use of wireless charging. The optimization thanks to the excellent software side of the device allows a rather discreet duration, which can also be improved by the user according to the various settings, avoiding for example the excessive use of the X mode, which maximizes performance by consuming more energy.

In the field of prices, Asus has certainly managed to come up with some great deals based on the product presented, which may not be perfect for all users, as the smartphone obviously aims at very specific targets and is not suitable for everyone. There Strix Edition of the Asus ROG Phone 3, or the "worst" shows up with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of memory, with a processor that offers slightly less interesting performance, at a price of 799 €. The base model of the ROG Phone 3 instead comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB memory at a price of approximately € 999. The best option is instead formed by 16GB of RAM and 512GB memory, and is marketed at a price of about € 1.099.
