Scorn - Preview of Ebb Software's first-person horror shooter

During the Microsoft streaming conference a few days ago a new short cinematic trailer of Scorn lasting just over two minutes, in which we can observe what are the first images of the game recorded directly on an Xbox Series X. For the uninitiated, this is a new first person horror shooter, and from what little we know we can see that it is really promising. The initial announcement was made in 2016 through a teaser trailer, which aroused general interest in the community, however after 3 years of spotlight elsewhere it has finally come back to talk about it.

Without any doubt, a supporting element that benefits the title is the dark and sinister atmosphere, with which the player must approach during the experience. Its graphic and technical power is something probably never seen before and it will be possible to run it in 4k at 60FPS: Xbox Series X players will experience a no-compromise version of Scorn, which will make the most of the potential ofU. After years of hard work in the dark, now Ebb software can't wait to show off his game to the gaming audience!

Years of work in the shadows

The development began in the now distant 2014, just one year after the foundation of the studio behind the product, with the aim of bringing a content that would be different from the others on the market: as you can guess, Ebb Software at era was not yet a well-known developer. With the help of multiple grants and thousands of supporters from a global gaming fund called Kowloon Nights, the next two years served to lay the foundations for the title and present their first playable demo to publishers. Thanks to the huge support provided by crowdfunding, now the idea that Ljubomir Peklar preserved for over a decade has materialized into pure reality. According to the game director, the artistic style that we have been able to observe is only part of what the experience aims to offer, the other part consists of the technical side of the game.

For the creation of Scorn, Ebb Software combined the pieces of a puzzle with a succession of well-chosen choices, drawing inspiration from multiple artists, such as the Swiss painter HR Giger and the Polish painter Zdzislaw Beksinski, which in the past have given light to splendid surreal works that clearly recall the designs and style present in the game itself. The conceptual inspiration instead comes from some unique writers of their kind who have dealt with the theme of horror or science fiction, such as Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, Thomas Ligotti e JG Ballard. Cinema was also used as a cue by the development team, specifically with regard to celebrated directors David Cronenberg e David Lynch, two well-known names in the world of popcorn and entertainment.

A distressing environment

We have before us a work to say the least suggestive and from gloomy character, in which - as we can see from the trailer and from the material made public so far - there is a carefully chosen scenario that takes on a distressing tone, populated by ambiguous metallic forms e fluids whose identity we do not know. We will find ourselves forced to face the nightmare in total solitude, crossing closed and sufficiently claustrophobic places to terrify us, with no one to help us. In this title the game environment will try in every way to destabilize and upset the player: each area is in fact characterized by its own story and its puzzles, in the hope that they do not repeat themselves but rather that they differ from each other. on the other. As the game progresses we will be able to unlock new weapons, skills and areas: any object present in Scorn acquires an original and unique form in its peculiarity.

The Xbox inside, which took place on May 7th, focused on titles like this one, created by third-party publishers and not by one of the 15 Xbox Game Studios. In this case, the Redmond giant was able to provide us with a succulent cinematic footage shot on an Xbox Series X. In the trailer shown during the event we can observe some of the scenarios in which we will go moving, while later we see a humanoid, or the protagonist of whom we will take on the clothes, in an attempt to nourish another similar creature with his own blood, from which shortly afterwards a horrible shapeless mass of flesh blooms full of blood veins and slimy tentacles; all obviously accompanied by a disturbing musical background composed of rather sinister and suspicious sounds.

A dive into horror

Right now the information in our possession about the gameplay, which we were able to savor in more detail thanks to the demo released in 2017, suggests that it will be an anxious adventure as it will focus especially on the player's frustration. We will certainly see this last component improved in the final version of the game, nevertheless already at the time stimulated the interest of many fans. A survival component also prevails: the player will have to pay a fair amount of attention to the supply of ammunition, otherwise you risk running out of water. For the moment we have seen only some of the creatures that we will face, however we are sure that organisms of different types will be present, including slimy four-legged creatures and some flying insects.

Before concluding, we remind all our readers that Scorn will be released in a launch window not yet specified as an exclusive on Xbox Series X e Microsoft Windows, thus excluding players of the current console generation. And you, are you willing to get your hands on it, or at least attracted by its charm? In our opinion, at least for now, the potential is promising and should not be underestimated for any reason.
